India’s Top 20 Non IIT Engineering Colleges
By Dhadkan of India • Aug 21st, 2007 • Category: Higher EducationEvery year some news magazines like India Today, OutLook and DataQuest devotes a full edition to compile a list of India's top 10 engineering colleges. Though some doubts are always raised over the methodoligies followed while making these lists and questions are raised of how come suddenly BITS Pilani goes out from Top 10 when previous year it ranked 2nd ! or how Netaji Subhash Institute of technology ranked higher than BITS Pilani (DataQuest rating 2005)
Anyway in every list, obviously all the 7 IIT's features as Top engineering Colleges in India so people don't get to know more about other Top colleges. So I have decided to put down a list of Top 20 Non IIT Engineering Colleges. This list is purely on my personal experience .
I am also an engineer, with 4000 something rank in JEE
but had to opt for another Institute(which is in Top 10 here) as my rank was too low and I wasn't getting anything good but I had got Good rank in AIEEE so went for that institute. Anyway I feels I can make a better list than these India Today or Outlook as I have "seen" what these have not seen.
Before I put this list, let me tell you, I feels almost all the Top NIT's, BITS Pilani, IIIT Hyderabad, DCE are fairly equaly and there is not much difference betwen them. I feels in that case, what branch you are getting becomes very important. I mean getting into CSE of Thapar is anytime better than getting into Civil of IT BHU or Mechanical of Bits Pilani. If you disagree with this than pleaes tell me as in the past 5-6 years alot has changed in India and what current student thinks
1. IT BHU
2. Bits Pilani
3. NIT Trichy
4. IIIT Hyderabad
5. NIT Warangal
6. Delhi College of Engineering
7. Thapar Institute of Engg & Technology
8. Anna University
9. NIT Suratkal
10. NIT Calicut
11. MNNIT, Allahabad
12. PEC, Chandigadh
13. IIIT, Allahabad (Please also read this though)
14. BIT Mesra
15. NIT Rourkela
16. NIT Kurukshetra
The Last 4 can be filled with any of these options -
* Jadavpur University
* ISM, Dhanbad
* Harcourt Butler Technological Institute
* Dhirubhai Ambani IICT
And of the remaining NIT's. All of them are good as they get lot of funds from government so you are always going to get good infrastrucutre at very cheap Fees.
As I had said earlier, if you feel the list need somemoderation or I have forgot some college(I know I have) than please tell me.

nice list buddy .totally agree but i feel it bhu should not have been included as it is infact a defacto iit itself.
Hi Goonda (are you from Andhra Pradesh?)
Anyway I have rated IT BHU as No 1 after all the IIT’s
so we both are pretty much agreeing to each other. The only thing that I feels and what other aspiring JEE students fails to see is instead of taking mechanical/chemical or civil in IT BHU, it is alot better to take Computers in some good NIT(if you are getting it).
What makes you put IIIT Allahabad behind Thapar Institute, NIT Calicut, and MNNIT Allahabad ? I would like to know because what I feel from your background is that you’ve been exceptionally biased in your analysis.
Hi Pawandeep, as I had said that this is a list which I have compiled on my knowledge and experience and from whatever I have heard from friends (I had friends in almost all of the above mentioned colleges when I was doing engineering). Now personally I feels they all are same, there is just a difference of here and there.
Ok, tell me one thing, lets again rebuild the list and lets compare the 3, Thapar, NIT Calicut and IIIT-A. Thapar is considered to be one of the best in North India(haven’t seen anyone not agreeing on this). Calicut used to be very popular and reputed, infact after Trichy, it was like second or third best among all Rec’s. I feels both MNNIT and IIIT-A are same.
Now you tell me why should IIIT-A be ranked higher than the other 3 ?
And no, I am not at all biased(why will I?) I am not getting any money to make these lists like what India Today or Outlook are getting
from certain colleges to boost there rankings.
Regards
I believe after hearing this u might refresh ur list of top 20…
Though it was a good effort by u…
The shocking news is that our Former president or missile man of india Dr APJ Abdul Kalam is now IIIT-H Distinguished faculty…. IIIT-H has tremendously improved in last couple of yrs… Placements wise it ranks 5th in all India.. and 9th overall by dataquest…
Hi,
It was nice to see your response to my comment. Well, I think you made an honest attempt to collect your rankings but I sincerely feel that your facts are not correct when it comes to IIIT Allahabad. If you only count the number of international collaborations that this institute has forged in just eight short years of its existence you’ll be amazed. Asia’s first Discovery Park, a truly international hub of research is coming up in IIITA’s amethi campus. The humanoid HOAP2 robots at IIIT Allahabad’s robotics lab have been purchased at whopping costs of crores in direct association with Fujitsu Japan. Not only this a Rs. 300 crore ASEAN India Science and Technology Digital library project is
also on the anvil. These are just a few achievements of the institute. Placement-wise we were no. 4 all over India last year (Dataquest 2006). I might not have facts regarding other institutes with me right now, but I don’t think a young institute pioneering such trail-blazing projects merits a low rank in your top-20 list. And yes MNNIT may be located in Allahabad but you shouldn’t equate it with IIIT because IIIT doesn’t offer multiple streams, it offers a specialisation in IT and it was only last year that it began offering Electronics.
Student perception is something that takes some time to change. And I am sure once all these details start making headlines, the reputation of IIIT Allahabad will sparkle in a startling manner.
I am BITSian so my comments may appear biased…..But selecting a good college is really important than selecting a good branch unless you are very concerned about your initial placement….Coz down the line say after 7 or 8 years none of us will do the coding part or say some project in electronics…but wuld b ending up as mangers or research heads…..so ur branch matters very less….
P.S:If ur really interstd in doing research especially in sciences then the above statements do not hold true
@Pawandeep - Sorry for delayed response as somehow I did’t realized that a comment has been made.
First of well, very well put response. Instead of flaming like many other does you have thoughtfully made your point. I can understand new colleges take time to establish themselves specially out of the student community. It is also nice to see IIIT-A doing well in so many fronts. What I have done is I have put your comment link after IIIT-A’s name so that people can also read what you have to say.
By the way, you are in which year ? I am myself from CSE stream so would love to know more about what others are doing in my area.
Cheers and Best wishes.
@Arvind - Hi Arvind, I think it is one of the question on which we can never have single answer acceptable to everyone.
“College or Branch”
Personally I agrees with you as I know a guy (actually highly intelligent guy) who opted for IIT Metallurgy instead of going to NIT Trichy/IT BHU and he did made the best of it. He got branch promotion to Mechanical and than is in Lehman Brothers now.
And yes your point about stream becoming inconsequential is very true but I have also seen talented people who gets low rank going to ISM in the hope that they will again try for JEE, most of them failed to get high ranks and wastes one year. There many be people who won’t agree to this but people should avoid ISM dhanbad at any cost over a good branch at reputed NIT.
[...] I had compiled a list of best 20 Non IIT Engineering Colleges of India so I felt to compiler a similar list for Medical Colleges of India too. So here are the best Indian [...]
my brother secure 58%in pcm.he secure 22000 rank in aieee.can he get a good college.i heard that for dce minimum 60% in pcm is necessary.is it tue. can u tell me about aieee cut-off for nsit, dce, tapar.
minimum +2 % for thapar
Vivek, I have kind of lost touch with all the cutoffs as I am in industry now but still, 22k is fairly low as far as getting good ranks are concerned and I don’t think he will get these into these colleges with that rank. What I can suggest you is try to get him into specialized field. Now days everyone wants to be a software engineer but instead of that, may be get him into Hotel Management(just a suggestion) or into Navy. Think about it!
i must say the ranking u havw done is quite sensible
Hi ‘Dhadkan of India’,
Thanks for your gracious response to my comments. I am deeply grateful to you for acknowledging my point of view. Well, about me…apart from being a third year undergraduate student (B.tech IT ) at IIIT Allahabad, I’m also an avid blogger. My research interests include natural language processing and I am currently pursuing a project in that field. It would be nice if we could stay in touch through email.
Warm Regards,
Pawandeep
Hi Pawandeep, sure will surely remain in touch with you. By the way, when are your placements ?
I have another website http://www.coders2020.com which you may find useful. Unfortunatley due to job and time constrains, I am not able to work on them but still I hope you will find the site useful.
Also from usability point of view, how do you find this blog ? is it helpful ? what will you recommend me to improve it further ?

Hi ‘Dhadkan of India’
You don’t seem to have any idea about the prestigious engineering colleges in Bengal. Otherwise you won’t have ranked Jadavpur University in the last 4. AND WHAT ABOUT BENGAL ENGINEERING AND SCIENCE UNIVERSITY, SHIBPUR???? It is one of the oldest(infact second after University of Roorkee) and renowned engineering institutes of the country. Moreover recently it has gained the status of Insitute of National Importance and awarded with the Title INDIAN INSTITUTE OF ENGINEERING SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY. It has also been promised of donations and facilities which only the IIT’s are used in getting from the central goverment. So it should be way above those ‘Chota Mota’ NIT’s, IIIT’s and definately above private institutions like Thapar University etc. So far as Jadavpur is concerned it is always better than the NIT’s if not better than some good ones like DCE AND BIT,MESRA. So I would better suggest you to gather knowledge regarding the potential Bengal has and to rearrange your list making sure that you are guided by some true facts and not by your own likings or dislikings. Please don’t make us think that you are biased or partial.
With Regards,
Abhijit
in fact IIT’s are the best collges for engineering in india .. and you know very well all india ranking is based on many factors including educational department with infrastructure..
in this contest .. we cant certainly one better than other
but certainly i can suggest better order of ranking for engineering related with computer science and information technology as i am also related with this aspect of engineering…
for computer science and information technology;;->>>
1. iit kanpur
2.iiit hyderabad
3.iiit allahabad
4.rest of iit’s
5.delhi college of engineering
6.netaji subhash institute of technology
deer friends

if anyone feel iiit allahabad a lagging institute
pls justify me..
without any confusion.. IIIT Allahabad is best colleges in india for information technology
hai…im a BITSian (goa)…which position do you think BITS,pilani,GOA,campus is on ,,according to u and ur frnds survey..??and dont u think its well above 10..?i donno…u tell..
may i know that best college for M.Tech in india as my percentile in GATE is 89 with cs branch
why you iiit A guys cry like a child ..for ranks .. the entire comments are filled with IIIT A shit … yeah .. it may be doing good .. but dont think you are only the people doing great things .. there are many other colleges doing better than you but not telling to the world what they are doing.. because its not necessary . but dont think every college is like yours paid .. crores of money to Times of india to get a better rank. I pity u IIIT Allahabad shits ..
Why non IIT? At least few institutes have crossed IIT Roorkee, IIT Guwahati.Like IT,BHU, BIT, Mesra etc. Moreover, VIT is not there? Is it not funny???
Why only non-IIT? At least few institutes have crossed IIT Roorkee, IIT Guwahati.Like IT,BHU, BIT, Mesra etc. Moreover, VIT is not there? Is it not funny???
man listen .. A college doesn’t provide u a job.it just transforms you to a man .. so u shit headed IIIT Allahabad guys stop crying for rank. ur iiita is good for nothing . u are saying that India today gave u rank 8 in india .. every one know that fact. The same u ppl got 26th in Outlook.so if u want to write something u write abt ur college, but dont blame and compare with other colleges .. we will screw u ..
listen buddy…..mechanical at bits pilani is far better than cs in any other college other than iits, nit trichy, nitwarrangal…….it depends on the environment of the college…….all the best mncs or core companies cum to bits pilani……..and i think it-bhu shuld be lower than bits pilani
i am not sure of now..but 10 years ago only those people will go to thaper if they dont get the same branch at PEC..even people living in patiala opted for PEC (chandigarh) if they get the same branch at PEC
what abt vit,srm,sastra?????????
nice list, but i feel IIIT-A should be in top 10?
i am a student of VNIT nagpur and I m amazed to see that the name of our college is not even there in the top 20 list of engineering colleges . for your kind and necessary information it is the third best NIT in India ..
yours sincerely,
ankan
Guys,
I know it’s been a long time after the article was posted and may be by now the rankings would have changed. But anyway I think that this list is not the most convincing one. Why? because it lists only the institutes from North India or close by.
I think there are some very very good institues down south which deserve a place here. For example, VJTI, Mumbai.
By the way, getting into a good institute is not the only way to success. This way in fact is for people who don’t believe in themselves. I am from a college called Walchand college of Engg., Sangli. This is a remote place and the college is a government aided college. But today I am in UK for last 2 years in a well paid IT job with a leading software company and believe me I did not take any extra efforts for this. So, believe in yourself and go ahead.. chak de India!
Regards,
P.S: I will come back to India soon.. i hate brain drain but then I had to be a bit selfish..
Hi, I want your opinion regarding the Annamalai University of Tamil Nadu. Is it a good University? What is its overall ranking in the list of engineering colleges and in the list of placements? Does it have a good infrastructure and faculty?
I like your blog very much ‘coz it helps us get a good knowledge of the colleges. Finally, I too personally think that IT BHU should be avoided from this list as it too falls under the IITs.

Thanks a lot, Please Guide
I have been alloted ECE in IIIT Allahabad. The comments posted have put an end to most of my worries regarding the technological advancements at Allahabad. Should I consider Mechnical Eng(DCE,Delhi)/ Instrumentaion and Control (NSIT) / Production Eng (DCE),if I get a call for admission in any of these. I live 3 KM away from DCE.
A very strange trend has been observed this year specially in the NITs of south India. CSE was available for very low cut off rank than ECE for all India as well as stat quota. comparison of top 25 selections which opted for ECE or CSE is shown below
Top 25 Selected ECE CSE
NIT, Warangal 19 6
NIT, Tiruchirappalli 16 9
NIT, Surathkal 20 5
NIT, Calicut 19 6
The students, among above, who opted CSE are mostly from northern states.
Now my question: I have got ECE at NIT Alld.(resident of Alld)
I have got 330 marks in BITS Pillani and have fair chances for getting CSE or Electrical & Electronic Engg., I will like your comment on wheither I should go for BITS or stick to NIT Alld.
hi to all of u
i do not understand what he hell has been written here
ISM dhanbad has been ranked among last 20 well the person who has written should know that ISM gets student from IIT JEE which is far far more tougher than any exam so u can guess th iq level of these student and more over i think either IIT’s are mad to hav ISM in JEE or all above person’s are dubk and sick. well dont show as if u have done sumthing big live in reality and that is ISM is among top ten institutes of engg in India considering the IIT’s as well
hey……. any one comment about VNIT NAGPUR…………………
hey…i read d list nd really find it gud… m really in a great trouble can u help me out in dat..!!!!!!

[...] the past I had talked about Best top 20 Non IIT Colleges, this Post can be taken as its continuation. Prashant has written some great content for His site, [...]
Hi vipul, to get admission into IIIT Hyderabad, you will need to appear in AIEEE and get very good rank (less than 2000). The same applies to other IIITs too I guess.
I really don’t know your exact qualification but just dont blindly go with any college because its considered Good. Know your potential and than go for something which suits it.
You can ofcourse go for M.Tech in any of IIIT. Please check my latest post http://www.dhadkanofindia.com/.....-in-india/ to find the Top institutes in India.
Feel free to get back to me if u need some help.
It seems, it is the list of Top 20 North Indian Engineering Colleges. South is doing great now a days. VIT, Anna University are doing better than even many low grade IITs and of course better than most of the NITs.

U know UDCT, Mumbai? Its only for chemical engg, but is said to be better than IIT Bombay chemical dept, in terms of research….which means ppl frm these coll hav equal chance of getting MIT, Berkeley, due to UDCT prof reccomoendations
Putting BITS below IT BHU is absolutely incorrect. In rankings, it has NEVER been placed below IT BHU in the last 11 years. It has been placed ABOVE IIT Roorkee 9/11 times and ABOVE IIT Guwahati 10/11 times in the last 11 years. Infact, apart from the DataQuest rankings it has NEVER been placed below any other college than the IITs.
