The bars in India are mostly confined to large metropolitan cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, and the like. Basically, they are establishments where alcoholic beverages like beer, wine, other liquor and drinks are served and consumed. Sometimes an entertainment stage is also present where live band, strippers, dancers and comedians perform and entertain the audience.

Bars in India are usually a part of hotels, and are called hotel lounges or long bars. They can be categorized in two ways; firstly, on the basis of the type of customers, and secondly, depending upon the kind of activities or entertainment offered. With respect to the former criteria, there are bikers’ bars, gay bars, singles bar, and so forth. In connection with the latter category, there are sports bars, dance bars, salsa bars and so on. Besides these, there are also lounges and retro bars.

The bar culture is yet to penetrate deeper into India. In the remaining part of the country, wine shops are more common. Some hotels and restaurants also maintain a small bar to entertain the customers infrequently. Such bars primarily have male clientele; they are not at all like the social hubs of the West. To give bars in India a better look, many international players have also entered into the market like Ruby Tuesday, Hard Rock Café, TGIF, etc.
