According to Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswamy, there are too many political parties are there in India and the growth in the number is may be because of the tax exemption given to the parties.

He delivered a lecture on 'Conducting Elections - Experience in UP and Other Recent Elections'. In his lecture he said that because of the tax exemption so many parties are today available in the Indian political scenario. He is in favour of power to eliminate such political parties.

He stated the statistics for the political parties. Today India has 910 political parties. This is a huge number for a country like India. But among them we have only 6 national parties. Most of the political parties are either non-functional or very small regional parties. The number was 500 in 2001-02.

He talked about the need of restriction of the political parties. He also took on criminalisation of politics and politicization of bureaucracy. He advocated fair and free election for which he emphasized on the reduction of political parties.

He spoke on the issues like photo identity card, unaccounted money spent by the politicians etc. He agreed that Election Commission is not able to control the visits of the candidates to the voters at night to distribute money, liquor, blankets etc.
